Charice article cited by Da Capo's Best Music Writing 2011

An essay on Charice Pempengco published on GMA News Online made it to Da Capo's Best Music Writing 2011, a prestigious citation of outstanding music reviews, profiles, and essays published mostly in the English-speaking world.

Written by Katrina Stuart Santiago, "The Charice Challenge" excoriated Filipino fans for the shabby treatment the global superstar has gotten in her own country. It was widely shared and discussed on social media.

An elated Santiago said she was alerted to the recognition by someone who noticed her name in the blog of Matthew Perpetua, a well-known US music writer and an associate editor of Rolling Stone magazine who also made the list.

The list was co-edited this year by Alex Ross, a writer with The New Yorker. Presented alphabetically, Santiago was listed on the same page as writers from Vanity Fair, the New York Times, BBC, and the LA Times, among other prominent publications. She was the only Philippines-based writer who made the list.

Da Capo's Best Music Writing has been described by the New York-based cultural magazine Village Voice as "close as rock scribes get to the Oscars." The latest compilation honored music writing published in 2010, which was when Santiago's piece came out, before Charice made her debut on “Glee.” ...

Of Charice, she wrote in 2010:

"That Charice is now an international popular culture image, one that can only get bigger when we see her on ‘Glee’ this season, reminds us of how messed up we are as a nation that searches for identity, and yet is quick to point a finger at who we are not. Of course we could cringe at the way in which she’s been introduced to America as living breathing proof of the impoverished conditions of the Philippines. We could talk about how this tiny Filipina with a big voice is a dime a dozen where we come from. We could say that she’s in fact suffering the exoticization of the Filipina by America, where she is celebrated for her talent yes, but also as a specimen: look at her, small as she is, look at what she can do, let’s try and make her bigger than that!

If anything we should be learning from the way they’ve managed and planned Charice’s international career, a far cry from the way it happens here. First, they let her be the little girl with a big voice, who might have been singing mature songs for her age, but was actually always singing to her mom (even changing lyrics)."

LOS ANGELES, Calif.— Boxing champion Manny Pacquiao’s adviser has denied reports that the boxer will team up with Charice in a concert in Daly City in California.

Pacquiao has said he is focused on one thing: Juan Manuel Marquez, and has scheduled most of his activities after the fight on November 12.

“Kailangan focused for this fight. Napakahalaga nitong laban na ito kasi siyempre, away natin mapahiya sa ibang bansa (I need to be focused because of course, we don’t want to be embarrassed),” Pacquiao explained.

A concert featuring Pacquiao with Charice, and Kapamilya stars Anne Curtis and Christine Reyes, is being promoted in the San Francisco bay area. But according to Pacquiao, he will not be able to make the show planned for November 15.

“Manny would love to go to San Francisco to participate in the concert. However, time does not permit it because we have conflicts with endorsements that we need to do after the fight,” explained Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz.

Koncz added that the only concert being planned is Pacquiao’s traditional post-fight celebration.

...Producers for the Pacquiao-Charice concert say they are aware of Pacquiao’s other commitments and are contacting fans. They are also trying to put a stop to unauthorized posters advertising the concert on the internet.

Chasters rejoice! Not only is it looking like Charice will reprise her role as Sunshine Corazon later this season on Glee, but Lea Michele herself would love for it to happen! “I adore her,” she told HollywoodLife.com's Chloe Melas on Oct. 22 at the 15th anniversary of Mohegan Sun. “She’s, like, the tiniest bundle of talent you could ever meet in your entire life.”

So when can we expect — or, at least, hope for — Sunshine’s triumphant return to McKinley High?

“Vocal Adrenaline will, I think, be coming back at the end of the year,” Lea revealed. “I really hope [they] come back, because that would mean that [Charice] would then come back.”

As a fan of both Charice and Lea, I’m really glad to hear those rumors of Lea barring Charice’s return were just that — rumors!

Charice has dropped the official music video for her single Louder.

The 19-year-old ‘Pyramid’ hit-maker premieres the official music video for her single ‘Louder’ on EW.com Friday, Oct. 18. Louder is the second single from her forthcoming second international studio album called ‘Infinity.’

On the video, Charice kicks some catchy dance routine choreographed by Gil Duldulao, the man who also worked with her previous ‘One Day’ video. Louder is directed by Tim Cruz.

Charice’s Infinity album is now available in Japan, no concrete details yet on the release date of her album in the U.S.

Enough with the dark clouds over McKinley High. It’s time to put the Sunshine back in ‘Glee!’

When FOX first announced that Charice would be making guest appearances on Glee last season, Chasters everywhere went nuts. But just as quickly as Sunshine Corazon arrived on the scene, she quickly disappeared, briefly resurfacing for scattered performances towards the end. Now that the show is getting back to its roots, bringing back treasured beloved characters like Shelby Corcoran (Idina Menzel), I think Charice’s return is long overdue.

Let’s break down my five reasons for wanting Lady C. back on Glee, shall we?

1. She’s the best singer Glee has ever had. And I’m not the only person who thinks so. HollywoodLife.com recently polled our readers about Glee‘s best and worst singers, and Charice blew the competition out of the water with 51 percent of the votes. (Lea Michele came in second place with 22 percent.)

2. Rachel needs a real nemesis. Let’s be honest here: While Mercedes (Amber Riley) gave Rachel a run for her money during their epic Maria-off a few weeks ago, it was never really fair to pit them against each other. They have completely different musical styles, each equally impressive in their own right, while Sunshine is totally on Rachel’s level. It’s no wonder Rachel felt so threatened by Sunshine’s talent that she sent her to a crack house last season. I would have done the same thing.

3. Shelby’s rival glee club needs members. Mercedes is a start, but if Shelby really wants to take down New Directions, she’s going to need serious firepower. And what more powerful weapon could she possibly have in her arsenal than Sunshine Corazón? Now before you start with that whole “she doesn’t go to McKinley High” thing, save your breath. Kids can transfer schools at the drop of a hot on Glee – just ask Blaine (Darren Criss.)

4. Glee is seriously lacking in tiny cuteness. While Becky is doing an admirable job, she can’t possibly meet Glee‘s quota of tiny, adorable moments all on her own. The occasional appearance from Sunshine — with her giant glasses and pigtails — would seriously lighten her load. Ands we already know those Glee kids are already overworked.

5. I’m going on a hunger strike until Charice returns. Do you want me to die of starvation, Glee producers? Do you really want that on your collective conscience?

Another Review of Charice's "Louder MV" Before Its Official US Premiere

The premiere of Charice's Louder music video seems to have waited too long that it already managed to sneak into Japanese cable TV.

Right now, poor (video- and audio-wise) copies of the same recorded-from-TV video are up on YouTube and have elicited reviews from at least two entertainment sites in the U.S.: Popcrush (read below) and Hollywoodlife.

The official US premiere of Louder will be on Tuesday on EW.com.

Charice has dropped the new video for ‘Louder,’ which appears on her recently released sophomore album ‘Infinity.’ The video — which premiered on the Japanese television channel Space Shower TV — has less going on than her previous clip for ‘One Day,’ with Charice acting as the main player of the ‘Louder’ video rather than having a huge cast.

For such an uptempo song, the ‘Louder’ video is surprisingly on the simpler side. Charice’s outfits change, but not much goes on in the video except for her singing and a few dance routines. At one point, Charice stares out a rainy window as she emotionally sings, and in another part she stands in front of a decorative beaded curtain.

The ‘Louder’ video might appear to mundane to some, but for true Charice fans, seeing the songstress sing and dance is one always a treat. Although we enjoyed watching Charice partake in hardcore choreographed routines, we hope that her next video incorporates more of a theme, since this one seemed a bit bland to us.

"They haven't really talked to me about 'Sunshine's comeback.' I am not expecting (it) but It's definitely a great news that Ryan said that. We'll see what's gonna happen."

Charice in Glee Season 3: Still a Possibility

When asked in previous months about her coming back to Glee Season 3, Charice would often answer "I can't say anything about it" or something similar.

In September however she finally said in a video that Sunshine Corazon (Charice's character in Glee) was not going to appear in Glee Season 3 since according to the show's spokesperons(s) they were not going to have guest stars. What caught our attention was how she particularly mentioned "Season 3" which we would like to interpret as leaving open the possibility for her return to the show at another time or in another season.

Now in this October 8 article from the Philippines, the writer says:

...We asked Ryan if Charice’s guest stint on “Glee” is over. Ryan replied that there was no closure to the story line of Charice’s Sunshine Corazon character, so he said that the singer might come back toward the end of the season. He sounded definite about one thing: “I love Charice.”

So we guess Charice's return to Glee is still a possibility. What do you think?

Charice recently performed at the F1 Grand Prix in Singapore, and not only did the Filipina cutie perform her own original songs, she took on some covers from her favorite artists as well. Charice performed her own renditions of songs from Adele, Beyonce, and Michael Jackson for the fans gathered at the Grand Prix in Singapore.

Opening with her song ‘Pyramid,’ Charice belted out the words of the powerful tune that truly launched her into solo stardom. As she finished performing ‘Pyramid,’ Charice took a breather for about two seconds before she kicked it into high gear with a live version of Beyonce’s debut single ‘Crazy in Love.’ The adorable vocal powerhouse danced around stage as she did Beyonce’s track justice and then some.

That same night, Charice also paid tribute to the late King of Pop by performing two Michael Jackson songs. She treated fans to energetic covers of ‘Billie Jean’ and ‘The Way You Make Me Feel,’ doing some impressive moves a la MJ. The performances were a fun way to remember Jackson’s musical legacy, and Charice definitely would’ve made the King of Pop proud with her vivacious attitude and pitch-perfect covers.

Charice Pempengco took control of the microphone on Friday night for her fans in Singapore. The international superstar was on stage for the Singapore Grand Prix entertainment part of the program. Joining artists like Shakira and Boy George over the two-day event it was a chance to sing for the fans who love her music as well as car racing. This was her first time to get an invitation fort the event.

The set of the evening not only allowed her to sing new singles off her upcoming album "Infinity," she also performed cover songs for the crowd. Two of the songs that got the crowd going were from Michael Jackson's catalog. Singing "Way You Make Me Feel" and "Billy Jean" the starlet's vocal performance was stunning. Add the dance moves on stage and it was a moment to remember.

Charice Views First Cut of "Louder" Music Video

News about Charice these days are coming from the people working with her. One of the latest is about her music video for "Louder", a song included in her Infinity album.

Tim Cruz, her music video director for "Louder", tweeted on September 24 that he was making some adjustments on the rough cut before sending it to the music label.

Today, a tweet from Courtney Blooding says Charice gave the go signal for her to say that they just saw the first cut of "Louder" and that they loved it.
